Why “DM for Price” Is Quietly Killing Your Sales

September 24, 2026

You post a product. Someone likes it. Seconds later, a comment: “Price?”

You reply: “DM me.”

And that’s where most of your sales go to die.

Here’s what’s actually happening. That person saw something they wanted. In that moment, they were ready to buy. But instead of letting them buy, you made them wait. Wait for you to see the DM. Wait for you to reply with a price. Wait again while they ask about size, color, or delivery. By the time you get back to them, the urge that made them want to buy in the first place has cooled off.

This is one of the most common (and most invisible) sales leaks for small businesses in Nigeria, especially fashion, food, and beauty brands selling through Instagram and WhatsApp. You’re not losing customers because your product is bad. You’re losing them because of the gap between “I want this” and “I paid for this.”

Think about how you shop online yourself. When you’re on a site like Jumia or Konga and you see something you like, you don’t message a stranger to ask how much it costs. The price is right there. You add to cart. You pay. Done. That’s the experience your customers expect, even from a small business.

Why “DM for price” costs you more than you think

Every extra step between seeing a product and paying for it is a chance for a customer to change their mind. A price hidden behind a DM adds friction, and friction kills impulse buys. It also puts pressure on you (or your social media manager) to reply instantly, all day, every day, or risk losing the sale entirely.

There’s also a trust issue. To a stranger, “DM for price” can sometimes read as unprofessional, even if your product is excellent. It makes a business feel smaller and less serious than it actually is.

What actually fixes this

A simple website with visible prices, product photos, and a checkout button removes the wait entirely. Someone sees your product, taps buy, and pays right there. No back and forth. No lost momentum. No relying on you being awake and online to catch the sale.

You don’t need a massive online store to start. Even a simple catalogue-style website with clear pricing and an “Order Now” button that goes straight to checkout or WhatsApp with pre-filled details can dramatically cut the friction that’s currently costing you sales.

If your customers are still messaging you to ask “how much,” that’s not loyalty. That’s a gap in your sales process, and it’s one you can close.
